Sphere Standards

The full title of the Sphere Standards is "Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response". These standards are supported by a substantial number of NGOs but there are also some NGOs who do not agree with them.

The Humanitarian Charter states that "Humanitarian agencies committed to this Charter and to the Minimum Standards will aim to achieve defined levels of service for people affected by calamity or armed conflict, and to promote the observance of fundamental humanitarian principles."

The Minimum Standards cover the following areas:

  • Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion

  • Food Security, Nutrition and Food Aid

  • Shelter, Settlements and Non-Food Items

  • Health Services

All of the above documents are available at www.sphereproject.org - once there, click on 'Handbook'.
