Nursing opportunities with aid orgs!

Submitted by irishnurse78 on January 23, 2009 - 1:48pm.

Hello! My name is Caoimhe and I am new to this great web site. It looks fantastic and I can't believe my luck in finding it!!!!

As a brief background, I am an Accident and Emergency Nurse in the North of Ireland.

As a child growing up in "the occupied land", I witnessed many inhumane things, including multiple human rights violations.
Growing up in an empoverished environment, I was challenged by my parents and encouraged to go to university. I first studied a degree in International Politics and then went on to study a degree in Nursing Sciences. Id now like to put all my skills to better use by helping others, perhaps in Gaza, or even Afhghan, or elsewhere in the world. And my question is, how do I go about doing this? Who do I contact?

I have been scanning through the net looking for opportunties to flash on the screen in front of me, to give me an insight into some aid organisations. However, there are so many, and many that I have never even heard of. I just dont know where to start?!!!!

I would really appreciate it if someone could help direct me and offer me advice here on what I should do to "be on my way" to a nation or group of peoples that requires a caring and well skilled nurse to help and partake in the challenges within humanitarian aid.

I look forward to hearing your responses.

Thank you, Caoimhe :o)

Hello Caoimhe,

Welcome to AWN. I hope that you have had a chance to browse the website. There are tons of resources for people who are just starting out in development. The first place that you should look is the Finding a Job page. Other great pages are Volunteering and Advice for First Time Aid Workers.

After you take a look at those pages if you have other specific questions please feel free to share them with the group. Your skills are highly in demand and there are a wealth of organizations that could use them. The VSO is a good place to start.

Cheers

Hi Caroline,

It's great to have you here on AWN. As a trained nurse, your skills and experience will be very valuable to many aid and development organisations.

As Sophie said, check out the various pages on the site related to getting started and come back with any specific questions.

Take care and looking forward to 'seeing' you soon!
Nats
