How do I get my first job as an aidworker?

Submitted by blueberry77 on December 23, 2010 - 10:53am.

I'm a police officer looking for a change of career as an aid worker. I have three years expereince as a police officer doing general duties. Can anyone advise me on what areas of aid work I would be best targeting? I'm guessing security may be one, but does the role of a police officer really transfer that well into the development field? What skills and knowledge should I look at aquiring before I apply for jobs? Should I study for a masters in the development/security area? Are there any relevant website you can recommended I check out?

I have five years experience working overseas, 18 months of which has been in developing countries.

Is this transition from police officer to aid worker really feesible?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
