Free E-learning Course on Social Safety Nets from FAO and the World Bank

In today’s highly volatile environment, safety nets play a vital role in building communities’ resilience to crises. Where poverty is chronic, they are key to breaking the vicious cycle of poverty and hunger perpetuating each other.

To meet decision makers’ need for understanding the role safety nets play in reducing poverty and building food security, FAO of the United Nations, in partnership with the World Bank's Safety Nets team, have produced, an e-learning course on Social Safety Nets. The course also contains resources for trainers which can be customised to local needs.

The course is available for free at: www.foodsec.org/dl

After passing a test, users will receive a certificate of completion.

What does it cover?

Lesson 1.1:
The basic aspects of Social Safety Net programmes with a focus on low income contexts and food security aspects.

Lesson 1.2:
The role of Social Safety Net interventions in middle and low income countries, fragile states, countries affected by economic crises and natural disasters, and countries carrying out a subsidy reform.

Lesson 1.3:
The objectives and features of common Social Safety Net interventions: cash transfers; conditional cash transfers; public works programmes; in kind transfers; general subsidies; fee waivers.

Lesson 2.1:
This lesson provides guidance on how to target programme beneficiaries and determine the level of benefits they should receive.

Lesson 2.2:
This lesson provides guidance on how to reach, enroll and identify programme beneficiaries; deliver benefits; verify if your programme is running smoothly; and exit strategies.

Lesson 2.3:
This lesson introduces cross-cutting issues such as: management information systems; monitoring and evaluation; communications; and institutional aspects.
