All In Diary

If you haven’t seen it already, take a look at the All In Diary.

It’s a kind of aide-memoire for humanitarians, woven into an A5 diary. Each topic gets one page: enough space for the main headlines, plus links to the full guidelines for that topic.

(The Advice Pages on www.aidworkers.net take a similar approach, on the basis that no-one wants 80 pages when they can see the main points on a single page, then click for more if they want.)

The idea is to raise standards by distributing the diary widely among aid agencies in an emergency. It’s designed to be equally accessible to national and international staff, host government officials and affected populations.

A promising idea, particularly since the training and knowledge of aid workers (let alone others) is so patchy.

Special versions have been produced for Pakistan and Zimbabwe. They’re working on a version for East/Central Africa and another for the Middle East.

New and old aid workers: it’s worth filing the download on your handheld device or laptop. Consider buying the A5 hard copy. Experienced types: check the topics you know best and suggest improvements for the next edition
